Conserving Marine Biodiversity in the World’s Most Remote Island Chain

Hawaiian Monk Seals

Hawaiian monk seals (Monachus schauinslandi) are an endangered and endemic species that occur primarily in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, where their numbers are decreasing. In recent years, however, their numbers have increased significantly in the main Hawaiian islands. This is a promising development for the recovery of the species, but poses significant management problems, particularly when females haul out on popular beaches to give birth and nurse their pups. These monk seals are faced with disturbance and the risk of transmission of disease from domestic and feral animals. How can we best protect these animals while minimizing impact to the tourism industry in Hawaii?
